Honors Modern World History 9 – Summer Assignment

Welcome to Honors Modern World History for the 2009 – 2010 school year!

            Honors Modern World History, like any honors or advanced placement course, requires a considerable amount of work.  You will have regular reading and writing assignments and, several times during the school year, you will be participating in presentations with your classmates.

            One of the first topics we will study is the Age of Absolutism in Europe.  In preparation, you are expected to complete the following assignment, which will be due on the first day of school.

Directions: For each of the monarchs listed below, organize a fact sheet modeled on the outline below.  Use Encarta.com, Britannia.com, and Wikipedia.com (make sure to double check your information).  Answers do not need to be in complete sentences, but do need to be neatly handwritten or typed.  Please note that several assignments will be based on this assignment.

Monarchs: National Treasures?

France: Henry IV (1553-1601), Louis XIII (1601-1643), Louis XIV (1638-1715), and Louis XV (1710-1774)

Spain: Ferdinand (1452-1516) and Isabella (1451-1504), Charles I, who was also known as Charles V (1500-1558), and Philip II (1527-1598)

Russia: Peter the Great (1672-1725) and Catherine the Great (1729-1796)

Sweden: Gustavus Adolphus (1594-1632)

Prussia: Frederick I (1657-1713), Frederick William I (1688-1740), and Frederick William II, who was also known as Frederick the Great (1712-1786)

England: Elizabeth I (1533-1603), James I (1566-1625), Charles I (1600-1649), Charles II (1630-1685), James II (1633-1701), and William (1650-1702) and Mary (1650-1702)
